When is the best time to go?
The best months to visit Socotra Island are October, November, and February whereby the weather is neither too hot or rainy, it is most ideal for the main activities in Socotra – hiking, wildlife and other outdoor activities.
Is getting to Socotra easy?
There are two ways to get to Socotra Island, the first option is with Yemen Airways from Seiyun, Yemen, or Cairo, while the second option is newly introduced just this year – a direct flight with Air Arabia from Abu Dhabi to Socotra.
How do I get around Socotra?
You can book a multi-day tour which includes all transportation, driver, guide, accommodation, food and the activities included in your itinerary.
Can I hire a car in Socotra?
As a preserved UNESCO island, public transportation is unavailable in Socotra, the tourism infrastructure is very limited. It is unlikely to be able to rent a vehicle or navigate through hotels and restaurants on the island. We strongly recommend planning your itinerary ahead with a tour agency to maximize your travel experience.
Is Socotra a good destination to bring children?
Socotra has a lot to offer, however it is not that child-friendly when it comes to a safe and relaxing family trip. Rich in nature, Socotra is best for adventure-seeking individuals who are especially enthusiastic about outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, fishing, windsurfing, cave exploration and more!
Are things expensive once I arrive in Socotra?
Socotra is not as cheap as one might expect, as the island has been difficult to access and the port is limited most imported commodities can prove to be slightly more expensive than usual. As Socotra has 800 indigenous species most food is imported. As agriculture has been prevented to avoid the spread of invasive species
Is there any special clothing or equipment I should take?
Light, breathable clothing for the warm weather along with a light jacket as it can get quite cool in the evenings. While visiting the villages, women must make sure that their hair, shoulders and knees are fully covered; for men, legs should also be covered with a t-shirt being an acceptable attire. Headscarves are not compulsory for women out of the main villages.
Do they have ATMs and can I use my credit card?
In Socotra, you can only use cash for daily purchases, in Yemeni Rial. While there are no ATMs around the island, you can bring other currencies such as Dollars and Euros to be exchanged there but make sure the notes are new and intact.

The local currency in Socotra is the Yemeni Rial.
Do I need to tip in Socotra?
Yemen itself does not have a tipping culture however it is not uncommon for tourists to afford a little something extra, especially for exceptional services.
Are there any restriction on buying alcohol in Socotra?
The sale of alcohol is prohibited in Socotra. Tourists are also forbidden to bring alcohol for their own consumption since the Saudi’s claimed the administration of the Socotra airport.
Do I need a passport and visa?
Yes, you do. If you do not know anyone in Socotra who can obtain a visa for you, it is best to have a tour agency arrange everything for you from purchasing flight tickets to visa application.
Can I use my phone and internet?
Internet and telecommunications services are limited on Socotra Island. SIM cards are available – you can always reach out to your guide to get one beforehand. In a paradise island as such, it’s not hard at all to stay offline while connected to the nature for a few days.
Can I use my normal electrical plugs in Socotra?
The power plugs and sockets in Socotra is the same as Yemen, they are of type A, D and G. Please bring with you a travel adapter in case you are unsure of the type of plugs required.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, it is strongly recommended to buy travel insurance on every trip in case of any unforeseen circumstances/cancellations.
